Position Description: 

DESCRIPTION OF PROGRAM: This position will be located in Ypsilanti, Michigan. The Michigan Advocacy Program (MAP) provides direct free legal services to low income persons in 13 counties and administers five statewide program through its Michigan Statewide Advocacy Services (MSAS) division. Overall, MAP/MSAS employs nearly 100 attorneys, paralegals, and administrators in 10 offices across Michigan. See mplp.org, miadvocacy.org, and michigansas.org for more information.

This position will be housed in our Michigan Poverty Law Program (MPLP) office. MPLP provides state support services to local legal services programs and other poverty law advocates throughout Michigan. Our goals are to support the advocacy of civil legal aid programs; to coordinate advocacy for low income individuals and families in Michigan; to assure that a full range of advocacy continues on behalf of the poor; and to lead policy and systemic advocacy efforts in Michigan on behalf of low income families and vulnerable populations.

MPLP’s IT department initiates and leads statewide technology initiatives, provides tech support for the Pika Case Management System program, and provides general technology consultation and support to legal aid programs around the state. MPLP IT also provides comprehensive technology services and support for MSAS and MAP.

RESPONSIBILITIES: This is a full time position that is responsible for all activities related to desktop/server Systems Administration and LAN/Telecommunications in support of organizational requirements for MAP and MSAS: installing, configuring and maintaining operating systems on computer desktops and server hardware, including web application/ database/storage servers utilizing Linux-based platforms; researching, evaluating, integrating and implementing methodologies; capacity planning; end-user training and technical support. This includes responsibility for statewide Case Management System (Pika) support; providing tech consultations to other legal aid programs; and coordinating with MAP IT support and administrative staff to plan, budget, procure, install, and maintain IT equipment for both MAP and MSAS. The Systems Administrator will work closely with management staff to assess and address user and law practice needs. Principal working relationships include the two other MPLP IT staff (statewide website coordinator and project manager), MAP’s IT staff, MAP and MSAS Administrative Staff, all system users, vendors, and consultants. Some travel to outlying offices required.

BENEFITS: This is a full-time position with a salary starting at $60,000; final salary offer will depend on years of relevant experience. Benefits include excellent health, disability, and fringe benefits, and leave time.

Requirements: 

QUALIFICATIONS: A Bachelor’s degree in computer science or equivalent education and experience, along with advanced technical and managerial credentials, preferred. Five or more years in network systems management, user training, and support is preferred. Experience with Microsoft products, Google Suite, Allworx/Windstream, Drupal, Go To Assist, Pika, and/or Mailman preferred. Must have a broad knowledge of emerging technologies to provide guidance and expertise in aligning the organization’s short and long-term IT needs with its strategic goals and objectives. Experience in working with nonprofits and/or legal services organizations preferred. Excellent verbal and written communication skills, ability to meet deadlines, to conduct and direct research into IT issues and products, to take initiative in the development and completions of projects, and to work successfully on teams is required. Strong project management, organizational and time management skills, along with excellent problem-solving, analytical, and evaluative skills preferred. Applicants need to be organized, prioritize multiple tasks, work independently, convey technical procedures in simple terms, and have good interpersonal skills.
