Job Summary:
Legal Services of Eastern Missouri, Inc. (LSEM), a non-profit law firm that provides free legal assistance to people living with low-income/low opportunity has created a new chaired position named after its former Executive Director and Missouri Supreme Court Justice, the late Richard B. Teitelman. Judge Teitelman was dedicated to strategic and high impact legal advocacy during his tenure at Legal Services of Eastern Missouri. This new position reflects his vision and his unwavering commitment to justice.

Responsibilities and Qualifications:
The attorney named to the Teitelman Chair will focus on litigation and other impact advocacy tools to address policies and practices that create barriers to equal opportunities in education, housing, health care, public benefits, immigration or other basic civil rights for individuals marginalized by lack of resources, race, disability, or other circumstances. He/she will engage with a wide range of community partners in cases and initiatives to help carry out systemic advocacy. The Chair Attorney will work closely with and report directly to the Director of Advocacy to identify and develop systemic advocacy issues and to assist on the issues facing Legal Services clients.
The attorney should have strong litigation and advocacy skills so that he/she can provide assistance to Legal Services’ various units in these areas. Experience with federal and state court litigation is required. The Chair Attorney will meet regularly with the Director of Advocacy and the various units on systemic issues and work closely with unit staff in identifying, prioritizing and developing systemic issues. The Teitelman Chair Attorney will work with the Director of Advocacy to put together and participate in litigation teams for various cases and bring in outside resources as needed to partner with Legal Services attorneys.

Requirements: 

The Teitelman Chair Attorney will also serve as a mentor for other attorneys and staff, assisting them with strategy, litigation and technical assistance. Depending on the circumstances, the Chair will, as appropriate, provide supervision and/or guidance to the other Legal Services attorneys working on systemic cases and may serve as either lead or co-counsel. The ideal candidate will have at least ten years of litigation experience but greater than 15 years is preferred. Legal Services will ensure that the Chair Attorney has sufficient support staff to carry out affirmative litigation successfully.
