Position Description: 

Alaska Legal Services Corporation will have an opening for a full-time staff attorney in our Kotzebue office on October 1, 2018.

Position involves general civil practice on issues affecting the health, safety, and stability of low income Alaskans, with special emphasis on domestic violence and child custody cases, tribal sovereignty issues, and representation of tribes and individuals in Indian Child Welfare Act and other Native law matters. The office also focuses on issues that affect elders, like Medicaid eligibility, estate planning, and elder abuse. Duties include intake and casework, working closely with community partners and providing community legal education, and travel to the surrounding native villages.

Kotzebue is located along three miles of the Baldwin Peninsula, which extends into the Kotzebue Sound near the mouths of the Kobuk, Noatak and Selawik Rivers. Kotzebue is 26 miles north of the Arctic Circle. The current population is about 3,500, and about 75 percent of the region’s residents are Iñupiat Eskimos. Kotzebue is a small, close-knit community. The other eleven villages that the Kotzebue office serves are even smaller, for example, the village of Deering has about 140 residents. Kotzebue offers an opportunity to experience Inupiat culture and life on the tundra.

A commitment to serving low-income communities is required for this position. In order to serve clients in this region, you must be willing to travel in small planes and visit communities without standard accommodations. A successful applicant will have the ability to communicate and interact effectively with others. A background working in cross-cultural situa¬tions is desired.


Applicants must be admitted to practice law in Alaska or admitted to practice in another state and eligible for an Alaska Bar Rule 43 waiver. Salary range: 
Salary $60,624 – $84,312 per year DOE. Generous personal leave and benefits package, including partial reimbursement of relocation expenses, provided.
