Position Description:

Civil Justice, Inc., a Maryland non-profit legal services program, is seeking a full time Executive Director to lead the organization into its next chapter. Celebrating its 20th anniversary, Civil Justice was created to increase the delivery of legal services to clients of low- and moderate-income while promoting a statewide network of community based lawyers who share a common commitment to access to justice. In addition to its in-house staff, the organization uses a network of private practice attorneys to create innovative programs focusing on providing legal assistance to underserved communities.

Civil Justice’s programs include:
• the Foreclosure Prevention Project, which focuses on educating homeowners and housing counselors on options for those facing foreclosure and connecting them with attorneys who can help;
• the Economic Justice Project, which provides legal representation to low- and moderate- income individuals for critical issues that threaten their economic well-being such as rental housing disputes and predatory financial products and services, in addition to automobile sales, financing, and repossessions;
• the Limited Scope Project, which promotes the use of unbundled legal services as a means to increase access to justice for clients who cannot afford full representation by training private attorneys on limited scope, connecting potential clients with attorneys who can provide affordable limited scope representation, and educating potential referral sources on limited scope as an option for appropriate cases; and
• JusticeReferrals.org, a website that aims to revolutionize referrals by offering a platform to streamline the referral process among legal service providers and private lawyers, and will allow Civil Justice to identify unmet need and train attorneys to address those areas.

The ideal candidate will have a minimum of seven years’ experience as a licensed practicing attorney, and either be admitted to the Maryland bar or pending admission.
