Position Description: 

The American Civil Liberties Union of New Jersey is hiring a Communications Associate to help maximize the reach and impact of the ACLU-NJ’s advocacy through media relations, creation of public education materials, writing about civil liberties, and dissemination of the ACLU-NJ’s message.

Writing & Editing:
Draft and edit press releases, blog posts, op-eds, social media content, web content, emails to members, profiles of ACLU-NJ supporters and allies, reports, newsletters, and other materials.

Message development and public education:
Create talking points, one-pagers, outreach plans, and other resources.

Media relations:
Help field press calls, pitch stories to journalists, maintain a press database, track ACLU-NJ’s presence in media, foster relationships with reporters, maintain and update press database, and monitor media for opportunities to discuss ACLU-NJ work.

Rapid response:
Help manage rapid response to breaking news and prepare in advance to be as ready as possible for future events.

Coordination:
Coordinate internally within ACLU-NJ and externally with allies to learn about and disseminate news, help with communications component of issue campaigns, work with designers and other vendors to produce ACLU materials, help plan and execute logistics of community and press events, and other kinds of coordination.

Story-finding:
Proactively find stories related to our work, capture relevant stories in various forms, connect people with reporters, and develop a “wish list” of personal stories to illustrate and advance ACLU-NJ advocacy.

Social media and digital communications:
In coordination with Digital Communications Associate and the Communications Director, write, post, and strategize content for ACLU-NJ’s social media channels.

Requirements: 

-At least 2-5 years of experience in nonprofit communications, journalism, or a related field.
-Exceptional writing ability and ability to write about complex issues in different contexts for a variety of audiences.
-Strong editing skills, including copy editing, editing for tone, and big-picture edits.
-Ability to translate complex legal concepts into conversational, understandable, compelling content.
-Strong commitment to the ACLU’s values, mission, and goals, along with an understanding of the organization’s range of civil liberties and civil rights issues.
-Flexibility, adaptability, and good organization amid competing priorities.
-Demonstrated ability to manage projects and priorities effectively.
-Ability to work quickly and under deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
-Ability to work with a range of people and fulfill occasional after-hours commitments.
