Increase access to justice in the Greater Dayton community by supporting the provision of high-quality legal services to individuals and families, enhancing collaborative partnerships to address critical issues of poverty, ensuring that children and families have increased access to legal representation that safeguards their homes, safety, education, health care, and public benefits, and addressing veterans’ legal needs related to housing, public benefits, employment benefits, and health care.
Advocates for Basic Legal Equality, Inc. (ABLE), a non-profit regional law firm that provides high-quality legal assistance to low-income persons and groups in western Ohio, seeks a Community Engagement Specialist for its Housing and Community Economic Development Practice Group in its Dayton office in launching an exciting project made possible by exceptional fundraising efforts in celebration of legal aid’s 50-year anniversary in Dayton.
The Community Engagement Specialist will engage neighborhood residents in identifying what they need to improve their lives and the quality of life in their neighborhoods; develop and implement an effective plan for engagement of client communities; provide general legal support for attorneys, including client communication, research, case investigation, and other case-related tasks; conduct informational presentations for clients and community members; train staff to conduct client education; build and maintain working relationships with community-based organizations, social service agencies, government agencies, and other groups; and take applications for legal assistance.

Requirements: 

Applicants must have excellent organizational and writing skills; the ability to relate well with clients living in poverty; ability to empower people to work together for the good of the community; computer proficiency; and a strong commitment to equal justice. Fluency in Spanish is valued at ABLE. Some evening and weekend work. This position requires significant travel to outreach activities. Applicants will need reliable transportation, must have a valid driver’s license, and must meet ABLE insurance requirements
