LEGAL AID SOCIETY OF NORTHEASTERN NEW YORK
STAFF ATTORNEY – DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AND SEXUAL ASSAULT –
AMSTERDAM, NY OFFICE

Responsibilities: Assertive and compassionate attorney is needed to provide high quality culturally competent civil legal services to victims of domestic violence and/or sexual assault and to low income people in Amsterdam, New York Legal Aid office. The attorney will be responsible for providing advice, brief service, community legal education and zealous representation of victims of domestic violence and/or sexual assault in a broad range of civil matters including orders of protection, custody, matrimonial law and child support. May also be responsible for providing general legal services to low income residents of Fulton, Montgomery and Schoharie Counties. Responsible for implementation, recordkeeping and reporting for Division of Criminal Justice Services grant and U.S. Department of Justice Violence Against Women Act grant. Attorney will be expected to work closely with local domestic violence service providers and actively participate in domestic violence task forces.

Qualifications: At least 2 to 10 years prior legal experience or equivalent is required. Admitted to New York State Bar. Demonstrated commitment to public interest law and providing high quality legal services to clients in civil matters. Attentive and effective management of a robust litigation caseload involving sensitive and traumatic circumstances. Must be assertive, compassionate, demonstrate good judgment, be highly organized, detail-oriented, and able to communicate effectively and work efficiently. Must work well both independently and with close supervision. Must have a car and valid New York driver’s license. Excellent computer, research and writing skills. Prior experience in high quality representation of victims of domestic violence and/or sexual assault in Family Court or relevant experience. Ability to speak Spanish a plus.

Program Profile: The Legal Aid Society is a publicly funded law firm which provides free civil legal services to low-income individuals. This position is in our branch office in Amsterdam. The Amsterdam office serves low income individuals in Fulton, Montgomery and Schoharie Counties.

Salary: $46,307 to $66,016 Unionized program, with excellent fringe benefits. May be eligible for Loan Repayment Assistance Program.
