Organization: Bay Legal (www.baylegal.org.) is the largest legal services provider in the Bay Area, serving Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, Napa, San Mateo, San Francisco and Santa Clara counties. Its mission is to provide high quality legal assistance to clients, regardless of their location, language or disability. Although grounded in local communities, BayLegal's vision is to serve the entire region. BayLegal operates six regional offices and has approximately 140 staff members. BayLegal assists clients primarily in housing, family law/domestic violence, access to healthcare public benefits, youth justice and consumer rights matters.

Position: We seek an energetic, culturally sensitive attorney with a strong commitment to public interest and social justice advocacy to represent low-income consumers in consumer rights matters. BayLegal clients are borrowers of revolving credit, student loans, home mortgages, auto loans, and payday loans. BayLegal consumer attorneys represent clients in defending debt collection lawsuits and in affirmative cases. The consumer unit files suit under state and federal consumer protection statutes, including TILA, HBOR, RESPA, FDCPA, FCRA, and UDAP statutes. Responsibilities will include conducting client interviews, identifying affirmative cases, and litigating in state, federal, and bankruptcy court. The attorney must possess excellent research and writing skills and an ability to manage a busy caseload efficiently. The attorney will staff consumer rights clinics throughout the Bay Area and will supervise law students and volunteer attorneys at clinic and in the office. Consumer rights attorneys participate in community collaborations and engage in community outreach and education. The attorney will be based in our San Francisco office and will be expected to travel throughout the Bay Area for intake appointments and clinics.

Compensation and Benefits: Compensation is based upon experience. Generous benefits package includes medical and dental insurance, company paid life insurance, a long term disability plan, 401k, loan repayment, and bilingual differential.

Requirements:

• Membership in good standing with the California State Bar;
• At least two years of experience in consumer rights litigation or comparable poverty rights litigation;
• Excellent communication, writing and analytical skills;
• Strong organizational skills;
• Ability to work independently and as part of a dynamic team;
• Ability to conduct community outreach and training;
• Experience working with culturally diverse, low-income client communities, and
• A driver's license.
• Legal services experience preferred.
• Fluency in Spanish preferred.
