Senior Attorney

Summary

The National Center for Law and Economic Justice (NCLEJ) seeks a dynamic and creative attorney with a minimum of 8 years of complex litigation experience to assume a major role in its aggressive impact litigation program across the country on an expanding range of economic justice issues.

NCLEJ

For over fifty years NCLEJ has been standing up for individuals, families and communities living with poverty, using the law as a powerful instrument for improving the lives of the most disadvantaged members of our society.
NCLEJ uses impact litigation, policy advocacy, and support for grassroots organizing to promote economic justice across the country. Because poverty disproportionately impacts communities of color and families headed by women, the Center applies this strategy to advance racial, immigrant, and gender justice. Our expanding advocacy focuses on 1) improving and protecting access to critical safety net programs, including nutrition assistance, health care, and child care; 2) protecting and expanding lower wage workers’ rights to decent wages and a safe and fair workplace; 3) enforcing the civil rights of low-income people with disabilities; and 4) challenging abusive debt collection practices that undermine families’ economic security. Protecting the Due Process rights of low-income individuals is a theme throughout our advocacy. We litigate extensively, typically as lead counsel in class actions, in federal and state courts across the country and partner with other public interest groups and the private bar.

Qualifications for the Position

NCLEJ seeks a lawyer with a minimum of 8 years of hands-on litigation experience in major public interest or private sector impact litigation. We seek candidates with: 1) significant experience in all phases of litigation at the trial court level, including discovery, motion practice, temporary restraining orders, preliminary injunctions, evidentiary hearings, and complex settlement negotiations; 2) demonstrated ability to assume significant leadership in litigation; 3) the ability to work effectively with colleagues and opposing counsel; 4) excellent writing, legal research, and oral advocacy skills; 5) knowledge of Due Process and Equal Protection law; 6) the ability to work in a fast-paced setting; and 7) an entrepreneurial spirit, imagination, determination, and a passion for NCLEJ’s mission. Experience in significant policy advocacy is a plus. NCLEJ welcomes applications from government and private sector attorneys who seek to transition to public interest work.

Salary and Fringe Benefits

Salary is based on NCLEJ’s scale, which is comparable to that of similar organizations in New York City. Fringe benefits include health, dental, life, and long-term and short-term disability insurance; vacation, sick, family and medical leave, employer contributions to a 403(b) plan, flexible spending plans, and generous holiday schedules.
