The Migrant Unit serves migrant and seasonal agricultural farmworkers (MSFWs) and their dependents throughout South Carolina. Although the Migrant Unit is housed in Charleston, we are responsible for representing MSWFS in the entire state on a variety of legal matters. The Outreach Paralegal reports to farmworker attorneys and managing attorney.

The Migrant Unit seeks a full time Outreach Paralegal with a commitment or interest in social justice work in the areas of worker and/or immigrant rights. The primary role of this position is to lead the Unit’s efforts of educating the MSFW community in South Carolina about their legal rights and assisting the attorneys in the enforcement of those rights. Responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to: drafting documents for review by farmworker attorneys and the managing attorney, interviewing clients, preparing intake documents and packets, preparing immigration petitions, working with spread sheets to build case files, updating and maintaining information and locations/maps of farm labor camps, participating in MSFW provider meetings and outreach events, collaborating with MSFW providers and other state and federal agencies in efforts to improve the working conditions of MSFWs and perform outreach duties as assigned. This position requires state wide travel and flexible hours, especially during the main harvest season (between May and mid-August), which is when the Unit conducts most of its outreach to MSFWs. The ideal candidate must be able to work evenings and occasional weekends during the main harvest season and the rest of the year.


Must be fully proficient in written and spoken English and Spanish, a Bachelor’s degree, associate’s degree or certificate program in paralegal studies is preferred, but not required. Candidate must be detail-oriented, have good organizational skills and be proficient in Microsoft Office. Candidate must have a valid driver's license and a good driving record as use of law firm's vehicles may be required.
