Position Description: 

Philadelphia Legal Assistance (PLA) seeks to immediately hire a full-time attorney for its Family Law Unit. PLA is a non-profit legal services organization primarily funded by the Legal Services Corporation. PLA views the practice of family law to be an integral part of the war on poverty and family violence. This includes taking a wide variety and complex mix of family law cases, including child custody, child and spousal support, protection from abuse and divorce. The family law practice at PLA also focuses on issues of family violence.

In collaboration with Women Against Abuse, HIAS PA and SEAMAAC, PLA has received Victims of Crime Act (VOCA) funding for an attorney to assist victims of crime including domestic violence and sexual assault in protection from abuse, custody and divorce matters. The family law attorney will also perform intake, outreach and community education to various client and advocate groups throughout Philadelphia, and work with the Family Law Unit team. The PLA Family Law Unit attorney must be aggressive, an active litigator with both courtroom presence and good research and writing skills, empathetic to client concerns (particularly family violence), able to deal with highly emotional situations, willing to work as part of a team of both attorneys and paralegals, and always maintain the highest ethical standards.
SALARY AND BENEFITS:
Salary is commensurate with years of experience based on union scale. Full health coverage. Generous holiday and leave benefits.

Requirements: 

Law degree and admission to a State Bar. Recent law school graduates are encouraged to apply. Commitment to family violence issues preferred. Prior work experience at a public interest law firm or in the area of family law preferred. Ability to speak and write Spanish, Chinese or other language effectively is preferred but not necessary.
