Metropolitan Public Defender (MPD) seeks a full-time Executive Director to lead every aspect of the largest public defender in Oregon, operating primarily in Multnomah and Washington Counties. The Executive Director is responsible for overseeing the administration, programs and strategic plan of the organization. In addition, the Executive Director also represents the agency in contracting with the State of Oregon for public defense funds and on work groups involving the operation of the justice system. The right candidate will define, with input from staff and the Board of Trustees, a vision for the future and the plans necessary to accomplish them. Anticipated start date July 1, 2018.
• Demonstrated understanding of the operation and management of non-profit organizations.
• Demonstrated commitment to justice for marginalized communities and an understanding of root causes of injustice and oppression.
• Significant experience working with criminal justice stakeholders.
• A reputable leader with strong ties to historically marginalized communities.
• Demonstrated understanding of intersectional oppression.
• A commitment to supporting creative solutions for system improvement and the demonstrated ability to think creatively about public defense.
• Current Oregon State Bar membership or willingness to take the state bar by February 2019 or attain bar membership through reciprocity.
• Excellent written and verbal advocacy skills.
• At least 5 years of experience in indigent criminal defense. litigation, At least 3 years of managerial experience.
