Position Description: 

The LGBT Program Staff Attorney will help increase access to justice for low-income lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people in rural California, including LGBT farm workers.

CRLA regularly represents LGBT clients in a variety of types of legal cases, including immigration, employment discrimination, education matters, as well as name and gender change petitions. CRLA provides legal services, community legal education and leadership development opportunities, builds active, sustained partnerships with rural LGBT community centers, supportive organizations and public agencies; and monitors and engages local public entities that directly impact LGBT communities.

The attorney will handle LGBT-related cases and non-legal advocacy projects. This position reports directly to the LGBT Program Director. The LGBT Program staff attorney will most likely be based in CRLA’s Salinas or Watsonville field offices. However, candidates who wish to be placed in a different CRLA location should still apply.

Requirements: 

•Admission to the California Bar.
•Familiarity with LGBT related law, employment, education, and/or immigration law.
•Excellent legal research and writing skills.
•Knowledge of and experience with LGBT, rural, and/or immigrant communities.
•Experience serving low income clients.
•Good interpersonal skills and ability to interact constructively with diverse populations.
•Ability to engage in intersectional advocacy and to bring the lens of intersectionality to CRLA’s work with clients and community partners. Media relations skills.
•Community education experience (developing and delivering workshops and presentations).
•Willingness to travel is required. Travel costs, including mileage, are reimbursed.
•Willingness to work some evenings and weekend days.
•Oral and written fluency in Spanish and English preferred.
•Data analysis and investigation skills or experience.
•Computer knowledgeable (Microsoft Suite,Legal Server,Paycom & other cloud base systems).
