Position Description: 

Join the Neighborhood Legal Services of Los Angeles County (NLSLA) and become part of an energetic team of advocates that provides life changing legal services to address the critical issues that significantly impact the poor. NLSLA’s work includes litigation, training, policy advocacy, technical assistance, and community education.

NLSLA is currently seeking several Paralegals to work in the Antelope, San Fernando and San Gabriel Valleys. The paralegals will be part of a team of advocates focused on serving the needs of people experiencing homelessness and those at-risk of homelessness in conjunction with a collaborative of community partners. The ideal candidate will be comfortable handling significant client contact, especially clients in crisis and with time-sensitive legal needs. Ability to work collaboratively in a team setting, excellent interpersonal skills, and the ability to liaison with community partners is required. Strong oral/written communication skills, coupled with patience and sensitivity working with people in crisis is preferred. Bilingual proficiency in Spanish, Armenian, Chinese or another language spoken in poverty communities is strongly preferred.

Position: Paralegal - Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority (LAHSA)

Availability: March 1, 2018

Compensation: Salary $37,828 + - Commensurate with experience. Excellent Benefits which include: choice of medical, dental, vision; life and disability insurance plans; 125 plan; 403(b) with employer contribution, loan reimbursement, bilingual pay supplement, sick and vacation pay, and 13 employer-paid holidays.

Duties and Responsibilities: Responsible for working collaboratively with staff attorneys and community partners to assist and screen litigants for eligibility, schedule appointments, conduct client interviews, and help maintain project data and reports. Oversee the physical needs of the project including maintaining client files and important documents, ensuring regular communication with community partners, and provide individuals with educational materials and referrals regarding various legal issues. Provide administrative assistance as needed.

About NLSLA: NLSLA is one of Los Angeles County's leading public interest law offices and has been the primary legal aid program serving the cities of Burbank and Glendale and the San Fernando and Antelope Valleys for more than 50 years and the city of Pasadena and San Gabriel and Pomona Valleys since 2001. The NLSLA staff of 120+, including 50 lawyers, provides legal assistance to low-income individuals, families and groups in the areas of family law and domestic violence, housing, health care, education, public benefits, economic and job development, immigrant rights, consumer rights and environmental justice. The NLSLA headquarters is located in Glendale, CA with branch offices in Pacoima, Boyle Heights and El Monte.


Minimum Qualifications: Experience working with low-income individuals and families preferred. Bilingual proficiency in Spanish, Armenian, Chinese, or another language spoken in poverty communities strongly preferred. Qualified candidates should have one of the following: (1.) paralegal certificate, (2.) B.A. or B.S. degree with 1 year experience working in a law office or other legal setting under the supervision of a licensed attorney. Computer literate in MS Office. Working knowledge of court forms and court procedures preferred. Must have excellent organizational, administrative and writing skills. Ability to work well in a busy environment, enjoy working with the public and working collaboratively with a small staff.
