Position Description: 

Community Legal Aid (CLA), a non-profit legal services program providing free civil legal assistance to low-income and elderly residents of central and western Massachusetts, seeks an attorney who will spearhead its medical-legal partnership with UMass Memorial Medical Center in Worcester. The project is funded by the Legal Services Corporation's Pro Bono Innovation program. The attorney will oversee the administration of the project and will hold regular intake hours at primary care clinical sites; help train, recruit, and mentor private volunteer attorneys who will accept pro bono referrals; participate in leadership team and project evaluation meetings with clinical partners; serve as a liaison between the legal and clinical project partners; and handle a varied caseload. Clinicians will refer patients to the program who need help with legal issues involving homelessness prevention, income and health insurance maximization, humanitarian-based immigration relief, domestic relations, special education, and guardianship. The position includes grant-reporting and administration duties.


QUALIFICATIONS: Admission to Mass. Bar or entitlement to practice under a Mass. practice rule required. At least two years of civil legal practice, preferably in a legal aid or similar setting, required. Access to reliable transportation required. Candidate must be highly organized and have excellent oral and written communication skills, including versatility in communicating effectively with a range of stakeholders. Experience in developing, administering and/or working as an attorney in a medical-legal partnership or other collaborative setting strongly preferred, as are strong interpersonal skills and an ability to work collaboratively with corporate and institutional partners. Fluency in a second language, especially Spanish, preferred.
