Position Description: 

The Chief Development Officer, in collaboration with the executive leadership and the Board of Directors, is responsible for designing and executing the overall fund development strategy to provide for the current and future needs of the California Rural Legal Assistance, Inc. (CRLA).

Essential Functions:

1. Setting, articulating, and executing the overall development strategy for raising over $14MM annually to fund CRLA’s programs and operations, including implementation of the following core resource-generating initiatives: Grants and Contracts, Special Events, Annual Fund, Major/Capital Gifts, Planned Gifts, and Pro Bono volunteers.

2. Creating and meeting Development department fundraising goals.

3. Designing, implementing, and meeting department Key Performance Indicators (KPI). Developing a data-driven approach to evaluating return on investment.

4. Implementing best practices allowing for continuous oversight of grants and contracts revenue streams.

5. Actively managing and personally participating in the cultivation, solicitation, stewardship and recognition of CRLA’s donor portfolio. Key duties include the creation of key prospect lists, submission of detailed monthly reports, and coordinating visits, meetings and events with the executive director, board members and donors.

6. Coordinating capital campaign strategies with approval and collaboration from executive leadership, the Development team, and board of directors.

7. Designing and executing the communications strategy, including the annual report, press releases, website, and social media. Developing systems to encourage and increase board involvement in annual and/or major gift fund solicitation, personal giving and donor recognition.

8. Overseeing engagement initiatives to strengthen constituent relationships, create awareness and build support for CRLA. Developing strategies and innovations to further engage high-level constituents including corporate partners, new and existing individual and institutional donors, and funders at all levels. Increasing constituents’ philanthropic support by increasing understanding of the role CRLA plays in providing rural legal services increase.

9. Collaborating with the board’s Finance and Long-Range Planning Committee in providing insight regarding the Development teams work.

10. Developing productive relationships with internal stakeholders and departments to foster cross-department collaboration. Is responsible, with other organization leaders, for advancing and growing an internal culture and commitment to philanthropy.

11. Managing and developing a seasoned team of 5 development professionals.

12. Working with the Finance Department to ensure fidelity between development practices and accounting principles, including CRLA Gift Policies and gift receipting, tracking and valuation practices.

Compensation & Benefits:

Salary DOE; Generous benefits package includes Medical, Dental, Vision, Disability, Life Insurance, and 401K retirement plan contribution. Fourteen (14) paid Holidays, generous vacation and sick leave policy, some professional dues paid by CRLA and if qualified - participation in the School Loan Reimbursement Assistance Program (LRAP).


Required Education and Experience

1.At least 5 years of direct or related experience

2.Deep fund development experience
3.Demonstrated experience in securing and maintaining government grants and contracts, and private foundation funding.
4.Comprehensive understanding of donor management systems and tools
5.Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office suite of products
6.Experience in organization communications
7.Minimum of 2 years managerial experience, preferably for a multi-incumbent team
8.Excellent written, verbal and interpersonal skills.

Preferred Education and Experience

A highly qualified and desirable candidate would also have the following:
1.CFRE Certification
2.Experience with funding from Legal Services Corporation, a plus.
3.Familiarity with DonorPerfect
4.Experience with client management systems
5.Bi-lingual (preferably Spanish) skills
6.A Bachelor’s Degree or greater
