Position Description:

Position: The Portland Regional Office of Legal Aid Services of Oregon (LASO-PRO) is seeking a staff attorney to provide legal services to survivors of domestic violence, sexual violence and stalking. This is a full-time position, grant-funded for 21 months.

Background: LASO is a non-profit organization that represents low-income clients in civil cases. LASO’s eight regional offices serve the general low-income population throughout the state and two specialized statewide programs provide services to farmworkers and representation on Native American issues. LASO is an effective, high-quality legal services program that is committed to advocacy strategies having the broadest possible impact on client community problems. The Portland Regional Office of LASO (LASO-PRO) serves a poverty population of more than 236,000 in urban and rural Multnomah, Clackamas, Hood River, Sherman and Wasco counties.

Responsibilities: This position is specifically funded to provide legal representation to survivors of domestic and sexual violence as well as stalking. It is expected that the majority of the attorney’s time will be spent on family law and protection order cases. However, the staff attorney will handle additional areas of law for survivors such as housing, public benefits and employment cases. The position will primarily be focused on serving survivors in Clackamas, Hood River, Wasco and Sherman counties. It is expected that this person will spend significant time staffing the LASO office within the Family Justice Center called “A Safe Place” in Oregon City and occasionally traveling to other counties to meet with clients or appear in court.

Requirements:

Current Oregon State Bar membership preferred. Proven interest in and commitment to advocacy for the legal rights of low-income and other vulnerable populations. Demonstrated enthusiasm, creativity, good judgment, initiative, and willingness to work as a team. This position requires access to a personal vehicle and a valid driver’s license.
