Position Description: 

Program: Legal Aid of Western Michigan (LAWM) has a position open for a managing attorney in the St. Joseph office. LAWM is LSC-funded and represents low-income individuals and families in a wide variety of poverty law areas including domestic violence, housing, public benefits and consumer issues. The St. Joseph office has three other attorneys and one support staff. Although it is part of a 17-county program, the St. Joseph office serves only Berrien County.

Location: St. Joseph is a pleasant small town on the beautiful shore of Lake Michigan. It is 50 miles from Kalamazoo, 80 miles from Grand Rapids and 90 miles from Chicago via highway or Amtrak.

Candidates will be responsible for managing the intake that comes directly to the office from the CALL hotline. They must also possess excellent written and oral communication skills, the ability to manage multiple tasks, conflict management skills, the ability to manage attorneys, advocates and administrative staff, the ability to oversee litigation conducted by staff, experience and skills sufficient to implement an array of advocacy strategies, the ability to manage a caseload, and the ability to build collaborative relationships within the community. Proficiency in Spanish is a plus.

Requirements: 

Candidates must have five years of experience and some degree of supervisory experience. Member of the Michigan Bar in good standing (or ability to be admitted through reciprocity). Candidates will be responsible for managing the intake that comes directly to the office from the CALL hotline.
