Position Description: 

An Assistant Public Defender combines his/her demonstrated dedication to the representation of indigent clients with his/her strong and zealous litigation skills to provide exceptional representation on behalf of all his/her clients. The attorney in this position is expected to work independently in managing an active juvenile caseload while simultaneously working in a team-oriented environment focused on a client-centered approach to representation. The position will commence in late February, 2018 and will be located in Annapolis, Maryland.

•Tenacious representation of juvenile clients at every stage of the delinquency process.
•Ability to competently, independently, and resourcefully manage an active caseload.
•Actively communicate with clients, family members, supervisors, team members, and resources for optimal client outcomes.
•Continuously seek professional development through training and other continuing legal education and trial skills courses.


•Demonstrated commitment to zealous and comprehensive defense of juvenile clients.
•Criminal trial experience preferred, specific experience representing juveniles strongly preferred.
•Ability to work in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment.
•Ability to work independently, and effectively manage an active caseload.
•Strong client communication skills.
•Must have membership in good standing in the Maryland Bar or Bar of another State by February, 2017.*

OPD will also consider applicants for this position who recently passed the July Bar Examination. Should those applicants not successfully become members of the Bar at the time hiring decisions are made, they will no longer be considered qualified for this position.
