Position Description: 

The Montana Legal Services Association (MLSA) has an opening for a full-time paralegal in our Helena office. The paralegal will provide administrative and outreach support for MLSA’s Montana Health Justice Partnership (MHJP) and the Agricultural Worker Practice Group. The MHJP partners with the Montana Primary Care Association and community health providers to address the health-harming civil legal needs of patients whose health solutions lay outside the boundaries of medicine. The Ag Worker Practice Group provides free legal assistance in civil matters to eligible agricultural workers throughout Montana.

Specific Duties
• Provide overall support to MHJP and Agricultural Worker staff attorneys.
• Assist with outreach throughout Montana about MHJP and the Agricultural Worker Practice Group, including:
o Help develop and participate in community outreach and program initiatives throughout Montana, including regular travel to community health center partner locations, agricultural worker job sites and service provider locations as seasonally appropriate.
o Plan meetings (in person, by phone, or by webinar) of MLSA staff and community partners of MHJP and the Agricultural Worker Practice Group.
o Present on MLSA’s services, how to apply and project specific details of the MHJP and the Agricultural Worker Practice Group.
• Assist with applications from those who seek legal assistance from MHJP and the Agricultural Worker Practice Group, including:
o Coordinate communication among applicants, clients, MLSA intake specialists and staff attorneys regarding case status.
o Communicate timely with applicants and clients to obtain more information as needed.
o Perform conflict screening, assist applicants with forms and coordinate with MLSA staff in the gathering of relevant information.
• Provide paralegal support to attorneys in ongoing cases, including:
o Draft correspondence, discovery and simple pleadings, using appropriate MLSA forms.
o Calendar all case-related dates and events.
o File pleadings in court (conventional and electronic); serve court filings and discovery; investigate, examine and analyze documents obtained from the court files, in discovery and from other sources as needed or requested.
o Communicate with clients as requested.
o Assist with case file management including organizing and maintaining electronic and paper files.
• Other duties as assigned.


• Excellent oral and written communication skills
• Ability to speak and write in Spanish preferred
• Ability to work independently with a high degree of accuracy and attention to detail
• A willingness to establish and maintain effective relationships with clients, community partners, the public, judges, court personnel and the bar
• Ability to travel extensively throughout Montana, sometimes overnight
• A commitment to providing high quality legal assistance to low-income people in Montana
• Ability and willingness to work cooperatively and collegially within a decentralized statewide law firm
• Proficient at the use of technology, including, but not limited to, word processing, spreadsheets, internet-based programs and computer-based legal research
• Willingness to learn and further develop technology skills and abilities
• Some college, or bachelor’s degree preferred
• Prior legal experience preferred
• Prior outreach experience preferred
