Position Description: 

We seek an energetic, culturally sensitive attorney with a strong commitment to public interest and social justice advocacy to coordinate and lead a new BayLegal project that provides civil legal services to low-income veterans and their families. As the legal needs of this population encompass multiple practice areas, the attorney will provide legal assistance him/herself in some areas, and coordinate with other BayLegal staff for the provision of legal services in others. Practice areas may include Veteran's benefits, SSI/SSDI, G.A., CalFresh, and other public benefits; housing law; consumer law; and domestic violence/family law. Responsibilities will also include collaboration and coordination of referrals with partner organizations, tracking of project data, and outreach and education.

Requirements: 

• Membership in good standing of the California State Bar
• Strong personal work ethic and ability to organize time, manage diverse activities, and meet critical deadlines with minimal supervision
• Excellent writing, editing, and proof-reading skills and is very detail-oriented
• Ability to work independently and as a part of a dynamic team
• Cultural competency in working with low‐income clients from diverse backgrounds, including clients with physical and mental disabilities, LEP clients, and LGBT clients
• Strong organizational, language, and communication skills
• Exceptional listener and strategist who can thrive in a collegial environment
• Familiarity and experience with legal services practice areas
• Strong preference will be given to those who have experience working with veterans
