Position Description:

Lenox Hill Neighborhood House has openings for Summer 2018 law student interns with our Legal Advocacy Department. Lenox Hill Neighborhood House, widely recognized as one of New York’s premier human services providers, is a 123-year-old settlement house that provides an extensive array of effective and integrated services--social, educational, legal, health, housing, mental health, nutritional and fitness--which significantly improve the lives of 15,000 people in need each year, ages 3 to 103, on the East Side of Manhattan. Our clients include older adults, homeless and formerly homeless adults, children and families, recent immigrants, persons with disabilities, adult learners and thousands more. For information on Lenox Hill Neighborhood House, please visit our website at www.lenoxhill.org.

Our Legal Advocacy Department provides free, comprehensive civil legal services to low-income individuals and families on the East Side of Manhattan. Our legal staff of twenty-three assists low-income individuals and families with diverse civil legal matters such as tenants’ rights/eviction prevention, access to health care (Medicaid/Medicare/Child Health Plus/Health Plan Enrollment on the NYS of Health Marketplace), government benefits and advance directives. We operate through a multidisciplinary, comprehensive approach to legal representation, such that our clients not only receive assistance with their civil legal needs, but also have access to social workers, psychiatrists, ESOL classes and other services within our organization. This synergy of legal advocacy and social services creates a powerful tool to achieve social and legal justice for those in need.

Our legal interns will gain experience conducting client interviews and intakes, helping clients secure government benefits and other income supports, researching relevant legal issues, drafting documents, and assisting attorneys with active housing, health care and government benefit matters in court and other forums. Legal interns will attend trainings and participate in workshops. The internship is unpaid.
