Position Description: 

The Legal Aid Society of Mid-New York, Inc. (“LASMNY”) seeks a staff attorney to implement and oversee a new pro bono initiative in Broome County.

Background:
The attorney will be funded by a Pro Bono Innovation Fund Grant through Legal Services Corporation. The attorney will work with judges, local bar associations and pro bono committees to plan and implement a new program in the town and village courts of Broome County, the “T&V Program” to provide pro bono representation to tenants facing eviction. The attorney’s responsibilities will include recruiting and training volunteer attorneys and student interns, working with court staff to develop an efficient and effective process for screening and serving eligible tenants at court, and supervising a pro bono paralegal and volunteers. In addition, the attorney will develop forms and a best practices manual for pro bono representation in T&V Courts. The attorney will work closely and collaboratively with LASMNY’s Private Attorney Involvement Program staff who have had extensive experience planning, implementing and supervising similar programs. The attorney will report to LASMNY’s Director of Pro Bono Programs.

Qualifications:
Candidates should be admitted to the NYS Bar and have a minimum of five years of law practice experience. Prior experience with pro bono programs and/or landlord-tenant law is strongly preferred. The successful candidate will possess strong interpersonal, organizational and problem solving skills, and a commitment to social justice. Other qualifying factors include: the nature and extent of prior legal experience, knowledge and understanding of the legal problems and needs of low income persons, prior experience in the client community or in other programs to aid low income persons. Must be able to communicate effectively with clients, staff, volunteers, and court personnel. Must be able to work independently, efficiently and also collaboratively with others within and outside of LASMNY.
