Position Description: 

The Connecticut Fair Housing Center seeks an innovative, energetic, and experienced Community Outreach Coordinator. Reporting to the Executive Director and working closely with all staff, the Coordinator will be primarily responsible for disseminating information about the work of the organization in an effort to raise the organization’s profile, organizing community-based legal education projects that train and empower residents to assert their fair housing rights, building and maintaining relationships with key allies and partners, and developing and implementing initiatives to ensure that the Center’s work is responsive to the fair housing and fair lending concerns of target communities.

Specific Responsibilities Include:

• Managing and implementing community education projects including fair housing trainings for the general public, community organizations, social service agencies that work with members of protected classes, and other target populations.
• Coordinating the Center’s efforts to build and maintain new and existing partnerships with organizations working on issues facing our clients, including tenants associations, grassroots community groups, social services providers, advocacy organizations, and others;
• Where appropriate, building coalitions with other organizations to develop innovative strategies to advocate for racial and economic justice, homeowners’ and renters’ rights, disability rights, LGBT equality, and other transformative objectives;
• Attending community meetings and other public events to advance the Center’s profile and to gathering information about issues that may have fair housing implications;
• Working to raise the visibility of the organization through such activities as writing articles for specialized media outlets and targeted distribution of informational materials;
• Creating and refining processes to solicit input and feedback from community members, partner organizations, and former clients;
• Working with staff to create written materials and reports which highlight the work of the organization and bring the Center to the attention of new communities;
• Maintaining the Center’s on-line presence by updating the Center’s webpage and Facebook page to keep them current;
• Working with the Resource Development staff to create and disseminate newsletters both in hard copy and on-line for a general audience as well as for specialized audiences;
• Expanding the audience for the Center’s written materials;
• Seeking new ways to coordinate outreach and education between all staff members;
• Creating new opportunities for staff members to work together on outreach and education;
• Working on grant activities that require education and outreach;
• Taking on other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Executive Director.

Requirements: 

• Either a Bachelor’s degree and 2 years of experience in communications, advocacy, training, education, community/campaign organizing, or related field OR, if no Bachelor’s degree, 4 years of directly related experience;
• Exceptional interpersonal and communications skills; proven ability to cultivate relationships with and establish networks among a diverse set of stakeholders, including clients, partner organizations, community groups, etc.;
• Demonstrated interest in combating housing discrimination or civil rights violations;
• Ability to work independently and take initiative to lead projects while also working with a team;
• Proficient in Word and Excel; experience managing social media accounts and/or managing websites strongly preferred;
• Bi-lingual and/or bi-cultural individuals are strongly encouraged to apply.
• Must be willing and able to travel throughout CT for meetings, trainings, and other events.
