PARALEGAL/NUTRITION OUTREACH AND EDUCATION COORDINATOR

Position – Paralegal/Nutrition Outreach and Education Coordinator serving Washington County. The Legal Aid Society of Northeastern New York, Inc.’s (LASNNY) Nutrition Outreach and Education Program currently covers six counties, each with its own Paralegal / Coordinator, and is designed to increase awareness of and participation in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP, formerly known as food stamps) and child nutrition programs. In doing so, the Paralegal / Coordinator plays an essential role in combating hunger in our community.

Responsibilities – The Paralegal / Nutrition Outreach and Education Coordinator will inform and educate the local community about SNAP and child nutrition programs, prescreen individuals for potential SNAP eligibility, assist households in completing the SNAP application process and/or maintaining their benefits, help reduce or eliminate barriers to participation in SNAP, refer clients to other community resources, and refer to other LASNNY staff for full representation as needed. As part of this work, the Coordinator will be expected to maintain a daily presence in Washington County; develop and distribute written materials about SNAP; conduct presentations to low income individuals, community agencies and the general public; and connect with other community groups serving potential SNAP recipients or providing food or feeding services in Washington County. Responsible for outreach and detailed grant reporting. Regular travel, work from our satellite Washington County office, and limited evening/weekend hours are required.

Qualifications – Must have attention to detail, be intelligent, hard-working, careful, reliable, compassionate, have good judgment, and a demonstrated commitment to the low-income community. Must be able to communicate effectively with clients and staff. Must have relevant experience, paralegal certificate or college degree. Must be able to work well as part of a team. Must have a car and a clean, valid driver’s license and should possess good computer skills. Strong preference for candidate who is fluent in Spanish. Previous relevant experience, including experience with the SNAP program or media/communication activities, and/or B.A. degree is preferred.

Salary: $26,624 - $30,595 depending upon experience. Excellent fringe benefits.
