LEGAL AID SOCIETY OF NORTHEASTERN NEW YORK
HOUSING ADVOCATE/PARALEGAL – SARATOGA SPRINGS OFFICE

Position -- The Legal Aid Society of Northeastern New York (LASNNY) has an opening for a Housing Advocate/Paralegal in the Saratoga office. The Housing Advocate/Paralegal will work with the housing attorneys in the Saratoga office to prevent homelessness. Services provided include interviewing clients and witnesses; interacting with municipal code and building inspectors; assisting housing attorneys in preparing for trial; advocating for tenant clients in applying for and receiving emergency and ongoing public benefits, including representation at administrative conferences and hearings; and referring clients to other community resources and organizations as needed to maintain housing stability

Responsibilities -- Duties include conducting client interviews and assessments, developing individualized case plans, advocating for the client’s access to services and government benefit programs, such as public benefits and child care, conducting home visits and apartment inspections, assisting the client in applying for, finding and retaining suitable housing and spotting and resolving legal issues under the supervision of an attorney. Duties also include assisting attorneys in trial preparation. Data entry into case management system and grant reporting system required. Additional duties as assigned by Supervisor. The Housing Advocate/Paralegal will carry his/her own caseload as well as working on the Saratoga housing attorneys’ cases.

Qualifications -- Must be committed to ending homelessness, advocating for low income families and individuals and serving the low income community. Must be compassionate, intelligent, hardworking, careful, reliable, resourceful, have good judgment, attention to detail and demonstrate sensitivity to the challenges facing low income and homeless families. Must be able to engage and support the families served. Must be able to pragmatically solve problems, spot legal issues, and work well with adversaries, LAS staff and attorneys and others in the community. Must have either a BA preferably in the human services field (with a strong preference for additional relevant experience) OR four years or more relevant experience. Must be able to work well as part of a team. Must have a clean and valid NYS driver’s license and vehicle. Good computer and administrative skills. Spanish speaking a plus.

Salary: $26,624 - $33,242 depending upon experience. Excellent fringe benefits.
