Position Description: 

Georgia Heirs Property Law Center seeks individuals committed to the mission of increasing generational wealth, social justice, and community stability by securing and preserving property rights of low and moderate income Georgians.

Through a partnership with Equal Justice Works’ Georgia Affordable Housing Corps, the Center is offering a 2 year Community Advocate position to empower families and communities in Rural Georgia impacted by heirs property through the provision of technical and legal services required to fully realize and increase the economic benefits of homeownership.

The Center will pair the Community Advocate with a Legal Fellow in Rural Georgia to increase the scope of the Center’s services and develop outreach and training programs for property owners. The project's scope includes:

  • Title Clearing Services
  • Estate Planning and Heirs Property Prevention Clinics
  • Programs for Property Owners, Nonprofits and Municipalities

These position requires someone who is able to build relationships with clients, partners, and community leaders from diverse backgrounds; who is detail oriented and still able to see how case management fits into larger systemic change; and who is excited about advancing the Center and its mission.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Prepare and deliver formal presentations about heirs property and the Center before both professional and community audiences.
  • Coordinate outreach, education and technical assistance programs for property owners. Develop and distribute educational materials for property owners, nonprofits and municipalities about heirs property issues.
  • Work with Legal Programs Director to coordinate Heirs Property Prevention and Wills Clinics, CLE seminars and other initiatives.
  • Serve as liaison to Center partners, stakeholders and community leaders in organizing programs and activities.
  • Establish sound working relationships and cooperative arrangements with community organizations.
  • Represent the Center at community events, meetings, conferences, and seminars requiring periodic and sometimes frequent travel.
  • Identify and refer property owners in geographic focus areas who need Center legal services and technical assistance. Build knowledge of other community services and resources to make appropriate referrals for clients.
  • Support Legal Fellow with non-legal aspects of client cases, including development of family trees and facilitation of family meetings.
  • Assist with organizational communications, including social media, website updates and periodic newsletters.
  • Organize and maintain files and records of a confidential, complex, or otherwise sensitive nature. Maintain client files and information in case management database.
Requirements: 

Bachelor’s degree is preferred but not required. 2+ years community organizing experience is preferred, and a demonstrated commitment to activism and educating communities is required. Candidates should have public speaking and community education experience, be comfortable working in diverse communities and building trust with individuals and grassroots groups, and understand the special values and challenges of rural life and urban poverty issues. Candidates should have basic computer skills, including the ability to use the internet, email, word processing, spreadsheets and case management databases. Candidates should also be willing and able to work as part of a team in a professional and collaborative manner and have the ability to set priorities and meet deadlines, A “glass half full” approach to challenges, even when the going gets tough. Humor and expertise in laughter are a plus.

Candidates for the Rural Community Advocate positon must live in or around Fitzgerald, Georgia or being willing to relocate. Travel is required, and candidates must also have reliable transportation and a valid Georgia driver’s license.
