Position Description: 

The LGBT Program Coordinator supports the LGBT Program’s state-wide advocacy efforts. The
Coordinator reports to the LGBT Program Director. Along with the Program Director, the Coordinator
manages the program’s grant activities, builds CRLA’s state-wide LGBT-related advocacy and
monitoring strategies, and cultivates key relationships inside and outside the organization. The
Coordinator’s managerial responsibilities include assisting with the evaluation of LGBT Program staff
and hiring and termination decisions.

• Coordination of Grant Activities
o Help coordinate grant activities, including those related to community education and
training, and the provision of technical assistance and the distribution of related materials.
o Set up a system for monitoring non-case LGBT advocacy across all field offices to ensure
that we are tracking all relevant activities. This system might involve a periodic survey
for all field offices, tools in Legal Server or other methods.
• Strategic Planning
o Work with Program Director to develop and implement a comprehensive strategy for
advocacy that improves the educational experiences of rural, low-income LGBTQ Youth
and other especially vulnerable sectors of the rural LGBT population.
o Help identify strategic opportunities for the provision of direct legal services and
advocacy, as well as community leadership development that will generate positive
impacts for rural LGBTQ communities, particularly rural and low-income LGBT
• Statewide Monitoring
o Work with the Program Director develop and implement a strategy for monitoring legal
compliance and other indicia of the inclusion and experiences of LGBTQ students in
public schools. Possible monitoring activities including data captures, media monitoring,
report reviews and requests for public records.
• Funder Relations
o Support the cultivation of key partnerships with foundations, government agencies and
other potential supporters.
• Internal Coordination with CRLA Taskforces, Directing Attorneys and other Field Office Staff
o As needed provide limited assistance for LGBT program’s legal case work.
o Set up a centralized system for managing LGBT program outreach materials, including
brochures, presentations and other tools for community education, including Pride
Festival outreach. This system must be easily accessible to anyone in the organization.
o Set up system for regularly updating outreach materials, archiving older materials.
o Help ensure regular opportunities for CRLA staff to receive training on LGBT-related
cultural competency and legal issues.
• Partnership Development and Management
o In multiple communities help build relationships with key leaders and cultivate
collaborations with local stakeholders involved in LGBT-related advocacy that is
particularly important in low-income communities.
o Provide community education and trainings as necessary to cultivate and support key
stakeholder relationships and increase overall community support for low-income, rural
LGBT communities.
o Represent and speak on behalf of CRLA’s LGBT Program in critical partnerships and
collaborations that advance the organization’s LGBT advocacy.
• Management Duties
o Assist in the evaluation of LGBT program staff
o In coordination with LGBT Program Director, participate in hiring and termination
decisions in connection with LGBT program staff


Familiarity with LGBT related law
• Experience advocating for LGBT related issues
• Understanding and experience in meeting the needs of the LGBT communities,
especially farmworker communities in California
• Experience serving low income clients, especially in the areas of labor, housing,
education, civil rights and/or public benefits
• Ability to sympathize or empathize with the client community
• Good interpersonal skills and the ability to interact constructively with diverse
• Exceptional written and verbal communication skills
• Superior organizational skills, especially as demonstrated by the ability to meet
• Media relations experience
• Demonstrated experience in tracking and monitoring program outcomes
• Computer and data analysis skills
• Experience or willingness to learn Microsoft Office Suite and Google applications
• Bilingual (English and Spanish) required
• Degree from a four(4) year college
