Detailed descriptions and presenters for most workshops now available!

The schedule you will see on the DRAFT APP is not real! Our workshops will be on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday (December 7, 8, and 9). For purposes of showing you the descriptions and presenters for the workshops, we are showing them on Wednesday for now. The daily schedule is coming soon!

You can go to the app now and see what's planned for many workshops, but ignore the Wednesday heading. See the conference agenda for the actual days and times when workshops will be scheduled in the coming days.

This year’s workshop program will be divided into the following programming areas, with many sessions addressing more than one area. We are currently developing the program from the many outstanding proposals submitted by our network, but we have listed some of the session titles we will include in each programming area.

Programming Areas

Civil    Client    Public Defense    Fundraising    Joint

Civil Legal Aid Workshops

The benefits from civil legal aid cover a remarkably broad range of topics, all of which advance equal justice. Events of recent years have created a particular interest in issues that cut across the field of legal aid. To help advocates provide even more effective services during particularly challenging times, this year’s conference will include these workshops

Client Workshops

People who have been served by legal aid organizations contribute to success in their communities through service, advocacy, effective communication, collaboration, and leadership. Our program will include these workshops:

  • LSC and the Client Voice
  • The New Disability: Homelessness vis a vis Incarceration
  • Recruiting & Retaining Successful Client Board Members: The Role of the Executive Director

Public Defense Workshops

Defenders are champions of justice, employing proven and innovative tactics, tools, and technologies to ensure excellence in client representation and bring attention to the critical importance of quality public defense. The defender program will cover a broad range of topics and issues important to defenders, including these workshops:

  • Blending the Practices of Law & Social Work for a Better Criminal Defense System
  • First Defense Upon Arrest: Protecting Rights, Saving Costs, Reducing Violence
  • Smart Defense: An Innovative Approach to Quality Representation
  • and more public defense workshops

Fundraising Workshops

Both new and experienced development staff look for tools to create, cultivate, and sustain their organizations’ fundraising programs. In the difficult and competitive arena of fundraising, development staff must ensure that they have gathered all the “low-hanging fruit,” but they must also engage new strategies that attract competitive, non-traditional, and more diversified funding opportunities. Learn how at one of these workshops:

  • Leading for Fundraising Success: An MIE Seminar
  • State Legislative Funding Roundtable: Increasing Funding in 2018 and Beyond
  • Strengthening Legal Aid Fundraising

Joint Civil & Public Defense Workshops

Many workshops will cover topics of interest to both civil legal aid and public defense programs and advocates. Here are some of those workshops:

  • Clearing Criminal Records for Immigrant Clients
  • Holistic Programming: Bringing Together Civil Legal Aid, Criminal Defense, and Community Agencies for Superior Representation and Services
  • Housing, Not Handcuffs: Criminalization of Homelessness, Constructive Alternatives, Protecting the Human Rights of Homeless Person
  • and more joint workshops
