Community Legal Aid (CLA), the legal services program providing free civil legal assistance to low-income and elderly residents of central and western Massachusetts, seeks a temporary staff attorney to work in its Springfield office for a two-year period on a new project designed to help victims of crime with a wide variety of civil legal matters. It is anticipated that a sizable portion of the attorney’s time will be dedicated to cases involving education law for disadvantaged students. The attorney, in consultation with colleagues, will also assist victims of crime with other legal issues, including a full range of domestic relations issues; access to housing, benefits, and health insurance programs; and elder abuse. The position is funded by a grant from the Massachusetts Office for Victim Assistance to provide holistic services to victims of crime. In addition to representing individual clients, the attorney will engage in community outreach and education, and will work closely with community partners. Some grant-reporting activities are required.


QUALIFICATIONS: Admission to Mass. Bar, or eligible to sit for next Mass. Bar examination, or entitled to practice under a Mass. practice rule. Prior experience in poverty law strongly preferred. Demonstrated experience working with diverse communities strongly preferred. Fluency in Spanish strongly preferred. Strong interpersonal skills and an ability to work in a collaborative setting are important.
