Position Description: 

The California Appellate Project is seeking a Staff Attorney to work on our Unrepresented Condemned Inmate Project. The essential duties of the role include managing a large caseload of capitally sentenced clients who are without Appellate or Habeas counsel, performing record collection to preserve evidence for later proceedings, acting as a resource to the office and community on record-collection related issues, addressing client questions and advocating for clients as necessary, and working with the unrepresented team and CAP as a whole so as to ensure the best possible assistance to these clients and to the lawyers who will eventually represent them. Other duties include developing resource material for CAP's website, and keeping the community informed of important developments via training events and publications.

CAP is looking for candidates who are highly motivated and organized, with an outstanding work ethic and a strong desire to work with a very diverse incarcerated client population.

Requirements: 

Qualifications:
• Spanish speaker strongly preferred
• Member of the California Bar
• At least one year of post-graduate experience in criminal defense or related public interest/ social justice work
• Excellent verbal and written communications skills
• Desire and ability to work with a team
• Capacity to adapt to changing workplace needs
• Able and willing to travel
• Valid CA driver's license
