Position Description: 

The Legal Aid Society of Westchester County, White Plains, NY is accepting applications for the full-time position of Supervising Attorney.  The holder of this position will work with the Assigned Counsel Resource Center and also provide assistance to the Assigned Counsel Division.  Interested applicants should forward a cover letter and resume to [email protected].

JOB DESCRIPTION

The Supervising Attorney, working under the guidance of the Chief Administrator, will be responsible for overseeing the implementation of a new mentoring program for the Assigned Counsel Panel, including screening of candidates, development of training, and regular monitoring of the quality of mandated representation provided in courts throughout Westchester County. The holder of this position will also oversee attorney caseloads, assist with billing review, and prepare financial reports for the Assigned Counsel Plan.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Scheduling, planning and data collection for the mentoring program
  • Implement support for mentorship development; monitor progress of the program
  • Observe mentors and mentees, both in court and during meetings
  • Utilize technology for quality communication to all stakeholders
  • Provide leadership in new and innovative program development
  • Actively seek additional partners for collaborative programs

 

Additional Responsibilities

  • Become fully versed in the County vouchering system
  • Assist attorneys and courts with questions pertaining to billing
  • Participate in budget preparation and quarterly reporting to the County
  • Undertake such other activities as may be requested by the Chief Administrator
Requirements: 

QUALIFICATIONS

  • J.D. Degree with at least 10 years of indigent defense experience.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and reliable transportation
  • In good standing with the New York State Bar
  • Highly organized and proactive
  • Commitment to the use of technology to improve and extend services
  • Community organization skills, including the ability to develop programs and cultivate relationships with the bench, bar and other stakeholders
  • Demonstrated experience involving financial oversight, reporting and budgets

The ideal candidate must have experience in program management, strategic and collaborative leadership, and fiscal management.  Excellent communicator; must be passionate and committed to the goal of improving the quality of mandated representation in Westchester County.
