Position Description: 

The Senior Citizens’ Law Office, Inc. (SCLO), an Albuquerque-based nonprofit legal services organization, seeks an attorney for its mortgage foreclosure defense project starting July 1, 2017. SCLO’s Mortgage Foreclosure Defense Project serves clients who are 60 years of age and older, and who have incomes below 200% of federal poverty guidelines.

The project attorney will provide representation in foreclosure cases, and closely collaborate and co-counsel with other foreclosure defense attorneys based at United South Broadway Corporation (USBC) and New Mexico Legal Aid (NMLA). The SCLO attorney will focus primarily on cases originating in Bernalillo, Sandoval, Valencia, and Torrance Counties, but may handle cases in other counties as well. The attorney will also conduct workshops and other outreach events in coordination with USBC and NMLA, help triage cases, and provide full representation to clients whose homes are in foreclosure. SCLO is seeking a highly motivated individual who is passionate about social justice and strongly committed to helping SCLO serve our clients facing foreclosure of their homes. The ideal candidate should have mortgage foreclosure litigation experience, be a team player, and be patient with and sensitive to elders facing losing their homes.

Requirements: 

Requirements: Graduate of accredited law school, licensed New Mexico Bar member or a licensed member of another state bar willing to waive into the New Mexico State Bar. Experience with foreclosure defense work and/ or related consumer law issues is desirable. Applicants must be willing to travel around central New Mexico and elsewhere, as may be required to implement the project. Candidates also must possess excellent written and oral communication skills, manage a significant caseload, and build collaborative relationships within SCLO’s staff, our partner legal services agencies and the community.
