POSITION: Managing Attorney – Wichita Falls – Full Time

OVERVIEW: Legal Aid of NorthWest Texas (LANWT) seeks a dynamic, self-starting attorney who has vision, initiative, and a demonstrated commitment to public interest law to manage its Wichita Falls office. This position involves a rare opportunity to spearhead exciting strategic advocacy, including principled litigation aimed at large-scale change to benefit the poor and to oversee the design and implementation of a strategic plan for outreach to and in collaboration with low-income persons, including community groups that are made up of income eligible members or that serve the indigent.

DESCRIPTION: LANWT is a non-profit public interest law firm that provides high-quality free civil legal services to low-income persons from 15 offices in north and west Texas. Located in Wichita Falls, the Wichita Falls branch office delivers civil legal services to the poor in a diverse, dynamic, and challenging city and in several neighboring rural counties.

ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS: Licensed to practice law in Texas, a minimum of 3 years relevant legal experience or with immediate reciprocity; demonstrated, zealous commitment to public interest law, serving the indigent, or other relevant legal experience, including progressive litigation experience; excellent verbal and written communication skills; excellent interpersonal skills; the ability to think and plan strategically and to demonstrate and promote a positive work ethic and work environment; proven management and leadership skills, as well as trial and advocacy skills; excellent skills in mentoring and training; the ability to develop and implement projects; and a readiness to have a flexible work schedule.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Knowledge and experience in legal services and civil litigation; interest in public interest law and working with low-income people, strategic advocacy initiatives; collaborating with community groups; supervising and training of staff; ensuring compliance with LANWT rules and regulations; some managerial experience; bilingual (English/Spanish) a plus; and skills in developing and teaching legal advocates in various substantive law areas and trial advocacy.

JOB DESCRIPTIONS: The principal duties of the managing attorney will be to oversee the office’s litigation and other advocacy, to plan and implement outreach to and collaboration with members of the low-income community and community groups, and to foster supportive relationships with the local bar. The managing attorney will also handle his/her own caseload proportionate to management and administrative duties.

To achieve these ends and to further LANWT’s mission of reducing poverty by providing equitable access to the civil justice system, the managing attorney’s duties will also include providing direct supervision to attorneys and support staff, working with staff attorneys in reviewing and assigning new client applications for assistance, co-counseling cases with staff attorneys, participating in LANWT and statewide projects and meetings, ensuring compliance with requirements of funding sources, overseeing office administrative matters, supervising the office’s pro bono program, and handling staff disciplinary matters and client complaints.

COMPENSATION: Based on applicant’s years of experience.
