Position Description: 

• Manage attorneys in the Supporting Families Workgroup that will consist of cross-substantive areas presently including family law and immigration, pursuant to Foundation policies and procedures;
• Works with the management team to ensure the Foundation’s mission is being met;
• Maintain an active caseload which consists of state and federal trial and appellate work as appropriate;
• In conjunction with the Director of Development, and the Grants and Contracts Manager participates in resource development, including management of grants, as necessary, identifying and pursuing grants and other funding;
• Supervise the maintenance of proper case files and time records;
• Assures smooth operation of the office;
• Maintain liaison with the client community, client community groups and non-client community groups; work with the office’s Client Advisory Council;
• Implement LAFLA’s Performance Standards;
• Encourage advocacy staff to develop specialized knowledge in more than one substantive area of poverty law and to act as a resource for other staff;
• Conduct case review meetings to ensure that legal services provided are consistent with LAFLA’s priorities, policies and procedures, and that they maximize office resources to provide the highest quality client service.


• Active membership in the California State Bar;
• Minimum five (5) years’ experience in the practice of law, including broad experience in lawyering skills, including client interviewing, legal research, writing, drafting, negotiation, law and motion and discovery techniques, and trial and appellate work;
• Expert on family law and immigration;
• Demonstrated knowledge of applicable law and community legal needs;
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills;
• Experience with grants management;
• Demonstrated ability to handle direct service cases and impact cases of a complex nature;
• Demonstrated experience in the supervision of attorney and paralegal staff;
• Previous experience in a legal services program preferred;
• Ability to work cooperatively with staff effectively at all levels of the Foundation;
• Ability to work beyond a minimum 7.0 hour workday, including evening and weekend meetings and events, and work weeks commonly in excess of 35 hours; and
• Good people skills and the ability to maintain positive relations with a diverse population.
