Position Description: 

The Legal Aid Society’s Civil Practice is seeking an experienced and talented lawyer with a deep commitment to public interest practice and policy to join a dedicated team of managers, staff attorneys, social workers, supervisors and support personnel as the Managing Attorney of the Civil Practice. The Managing Attorney reports directly to the Attorney-in-Charge of the Civil Practice.

The Managing Attorney position involves a rare opportunity to spearhead strategic advocacy, and comprehensive civil legal services program expansion to benefit low-income New Yorkers, and to oversee the design and implementation of a strategic plan for coordinated outreach and collaboration with low-income persons, including community groups that serve low-income New Yorkers. The Managing Attorney is involved in all aspects of Civil Practice operations, develops and implements legal and administrative program plans and compliance and reporting systems, in coordination with the Civil Practice Attorney-in-Charge, the Civil Practice Administrator, the Director of Grants and Contracts, and the Pro Bono, Fiscal and MIS Departments. The Managing Attorney supervises the Director of Civil Practice Helplines and the Director of Training. She also supervises the Civil Practice pro bono and volunteer coordination, coordinates community intake programs, and assists in the implementation and strategic planning of programs. The Managing Attorney participates in Practice-wide and Society-wide management discussions and decision-making and is responsible for maintaining relationships with other stakeholders in the legal, court, funding, and service communities.

Requirements: 

The ideal candidate must have: admission to the NYS Bar; a minimum of six years legal practice required; experience litigating in various legal forums, including State and Federal courts; knowledge in various practice areas within civil legal services preferred; excellent oral and written advocacy skills; demonstrated commitment to and experience in public interest law; experience supervising and mentoring others; supervisory and management experience preferred; demonstrated leadership ability; grant-writing and fundraising experience preferred; excellent interpersonal, communication and organizational skills; commitment to exploring alternative approaches for legal practice; the ability to work in and value a collaborative team model; pro bono, government, public service and academic experience is desirable, but not required; and proficiency in languages other than English is desirable, but not required.
