Position Description: 

Organization: Bay Area Legal Aid’s (BayLegal) mission is to provide high quality legal assistance regardless of a client’s location, language, or disability. We are the largest provider of free civil legal services to low-income residents of the San Francisco Bay Area with regional offices in seven counties. Our services include advice, referrals, limited scope assistance, extended representation, public policy and impact advocacy, trainings, and community education. From Napa Valley to Silicon Valley, BayLegal ensures fairness in the civil justice system for the most vulnerable members of our community. We help our clients protect their livelihoods, their health, and their families. BayLegal’s 100+ staff members provide wraparound legal services in housing preservation, domestic violence and sexual assault prevention, economic security, consumer protection, and healthcare access.

Position: We seek an experienced assistant for an office of 40 attorneys representing low-income clients in a broad range of practice areas. The position provides a full range of clerical and organizational services to attorneys and advocates, and entails significant interaction with the public, namely low-income individuals and families who are seeking legal services. Duties include reception services (answering telephones, greeting clients, making appropriate referrals); writing correspondence; requesting medical records from providers; making follow-up phone calls to clients, providers and governmental agencies; maintaining excel spreadsheets to organize tasks, operating and maintaining office equipment and machines; maintaining and organizing case and other files; providing interpretation and translation services (if bilingual); and performing other job related duties as requested by the Managing Attorney.

Requirements: 

Requirements for the Successful Candidate:
• 1-2 years' work experience in a law office or its equivalent
• An Associate degree, Bachelor's degree, Paralegal degree, or its equivalent
• Excellent oral and written communication skills
• Strong organizational and multi-tasking skills
• Computer skills and the ability to use various computer programs, including Word and Excel
• Ability to understand and follow oral and written directions
• Ability to work with diverse client populations, including clients in crisis and those with mental health and other challenges.
• Ability to work independently as well as part of a dynamic team
• Fluency in Cantonese, Mandarin, or Vietnamese is preferred
