Position Description: 

LEGAL DIRECTOR

SUMMARY
The Alliance for Children’s Rights seeks an attorney with 10 or more years of experience to manage the legal and policy efforts for at-risk children in Los Angeles County. Responsibilities include developing programs; supervising more than 25 lawyers/staff; litigation; coordinating reforms in child welfare practices; overseeing an extensive network of pro bono attorneys; strategic development; and participating in grant development.

OUR MISSION
The mission of the Alliance for Children’s Rights is to protect the rights of impoverished, abused, and neglected children and youth by providing free legal and social services, and promoting systemic solutions. Since its founding in 1992, the Alliance has served more than 125,000 children. Our core programs include foster care adoption, legal guardianship, healthcare, public benefits, education and early childhood development, transition-age youth, and system reform. The Alliance also serves as the convener of the LA Youth Collaborative, which brings together public agencies, nonprofit organizations, education systems, and employers to improve employment and education outcomes for transition-age youth.

The Alliance has been awarded Charity Navigator’s top 4-star rating for the past six consecutive years, placing the Alliance in the top 4% nationally of nonprofit organizations rated by Charity Navigator.

RESPONSIBILITIES
The Legal Director will report to the CEO in order to:
• Work with executive management to establish agency priorities and implement strategic plans.
• Supervise or co-supervise, motivate, and support the directors of our legal programs.
• Research and analyze issues related to child welfare.
• Oversee the development of litigation strategies, position papers, policy briefs and advocacy tools.
• Participate in steering committees and taskforces in LA County.
• Work with the Communications Director to develop media strategy.
• Work with the Development Department to advise and assist in fundraising, particularly in the creation of grant proposals to support our programs.

QUALIFICATIONS
• California Bar Admission, with 10 plus years of experience.
• Experience and success managing a diverse staff.
• Excellent writing, research, and analytical skills.
• Ability to facilitate and build working relationships with pro bono attorneys, elected officials, community groups and policy makers.
• Experience with advocacy work, campaigns, outreach, public education and media preferred.
