Description: Bet Tzedek’s Impact Litigation Unit represents low-income individuals in litigation in California state and federal courts. The Unit also engages in community education and advocacy. The staff attorney will engage in all aspects of impact litigation and policy advocacy in a diverse range of Bet Tzedek’s practice areas, including employment rights, housing, and public benefits. The staff attorney will work in close collaboration with Bet Tzedek staff, pro bono attorneys, law clerks, and community-based organizations.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
• Develop, conduct, and/or co-counsel strategic impact litigation;
• Conduct legal research and analysis;
• Build relationships and work with Bet Tzedek staff and community partners to identify systemic problems impacting Bet Tzedek’s clients that could be addressed through affirmative litigation;
• In collaboration with community partners, conduct legislative and administrative advocacy on state, county, and city issues impacting Bet Tzedek’s clients;
• Work closely with Bet Tzedek’s Pro Bono Director to place matters with pro bono attorneys, and train and mentor pro bono attorneys and law students supporting the Unit’s work.

Requirements: 

General Qualifications:
• Active member of the California State Bar in good standing (required);
• Demonstrated patience, compassion, respect, and commitment to serving low-income communities (required);
• Excellent research, writing, analytical, and oral advocacy skills (required);
• Ability to work on multiple cases and assignments at once (required)
• Ability to work independently, as well as collaboratively with other staff (required)
• Ability to train, work with, and supervise volunteer attorneys and students (required);
• Minimum 3-5 years of civil litigation experience (required) in California state courts (preferred)
• Bilingual in English/Spanish (highly preferred)
