Position Description: 

The Tennessee Justice Center, a non-profit, public interest law firm, is seeking an experienced attorney to direct TJC’s new food security and anti-hunger project. TJC represents low-income people before the courts, governmental agencies and the legislature. TJC focuses its work on the issues that affect people’s daily lives. Over its 20-year history, TJC has focused on income-security and ensuring access to healthcare for low-income Tennesseans. TJC has recently expanded the scope of its work to address the problems of hunger and poor nutrition in Tennessee.

The attorney will work to develop and implement a comprehensive strategic advocacy plan to improve state nutrition programs, including the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants & Children (WIC), and federally-funded school-based and summer nutrition programs. The attorney is expected to take ownership of both the client service work and the work of sustaining the organization. She must be willing, as are all TJC staff, to do what it takes to meet our clients’ needs. She is invited to become an integral member of the TJC team, driven by a desire for progress towards the shared goal of equal justice under the law.

Requirements: 

Qualifications:
• J.D. degree
• At least three years legal experience
• Admitted to TN bar or willing to take TN bar exam in January 2017.
• Significant relevant education, training, and experience in policy and legal issues affecting low-income people, as well as a strong commitment to social and economic justice
• Familiarity with legal and policy issues involving federal food and nutrition programs, especially the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP)
• Excellent speaking and writing skills; the ability to talk about legal and other complex issues in clear, persuasive terms for non-lawyer audiences
• Strong interpersonal skills and a sense of humor
• A high level of independence and initiative, good judgment, creativity, organization, and a willingness to work with others
Commitment: Full-time, immediate availability
