Position Description:

The Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI) is a non-profit advocacy organization that seeks to advance nutrition and public health in the United States. Among its myriad accomplishments, CSPI led the effort to: ban trans fat in processed foods; include an “added sugars” line for Nutrition Facts labels; include more fruits, vegetables, and whole grains in public school meals; and halt advertising by several food industry leaders of junk food to children. CSPI also publishes Nutrition Action Healthletter, a leading nutrition newsletter. In recognition of its contributions to public health, CSPI and its leadership have received numerous awards, including the FDA Commissioner’s Citation and the CDC Hero Award.

CSPI’s Litigation Project pioneered the field of food law in 2004 and ever since has been using litigation to tackle some of the toughest issues in food and nutrition, including, most actively, false and misleading advertising. Some of CSPI’s recent high-profile litigations are its consumer class actions against Coca-Cola for its advertising of vitaminwater (which has roughly as much sugar as a can of Coke) and against PepsiCo for its marketing of Naked Juices (as much sugar as a Pepsi and predominately apple juice). Other pioneering matters are underway, and in development. To learn more about CSPI’s litigation work, visit http://cspinet.org/protecting-our-health/courts.

Position & Responsibilities

CPSI seeks a highly qualified and motivated attorney with a minimum of two years of experience and/or an exceptional record, to join the litigation project in Washington, D.C.

The attorney will work with CSPI’s Litigation Director, and often outside co-counsel, to litigate complex civil cases in federal and state courts around the Country. The attorney will assist the Litigation Director with most litigation activities, including case development and discovery, and assume enhanced responsibilities in specific cases as warranted.

Qualifications

Applicants should have excellent legal research, writing, and analytical skills. As well, the attorney should be highly innovative (able when appropriate to think outside the box) and have a strong interest in and commitment to CSPI’s work. CSPI is an equal opportunity employer, and all qualified and interested persons are encouraged to apply. Prior class action experience is desirable but not required.
