Statewide Legal Services of Connecticut (SLS) is a statewide non-profit legal organization that advances access to justice for the poor, vulnerable, and hard to reach people through advice, representation, outreach, education, and strategic partnerships. With its administrative headquarters in Wethersfield CT, SLS reaches all four corners of the state of Connecticut in partnership with several legal aid offices, the private bar and special grant related projects. SLS has a 30+ staff of attorneys, paralegals and administrative employees and a budget of approximate 3 million. Our core funding is from the federal Legal Services Corporation. 

Reporting to the Executive Director, the FO is responsible for overseeing all financial and administrative operations, and is involved with overall program planning and management. SLS is planning an aggressive resource and development campaign to increase and diversify its funding sources. The FO will play an important role on the development team and needs to be capable of managing multiple funding sources with an emphasis on grant management and regulatory compliance. This position will manage the Financial Unit, in particular a full-time bookkeeper and will play a role in working with the Board of Directors Finance and Audit Committee, Program Administrator and IT Administrator.


Duties include: 

  •  Provides overall financial oversight and monitoring including grant compliances. 
  •  Manages the day-to-day operations of the finance department including, cash resources, accounts receivable, accounts payable, payroll and general ledger.
  •  Establishes and maintains an appropriate internal control environment.
  •  Prepares reviews and analyzes monthly financial reports.
  •  Leads preparation of the annual budget.
  •  Prepares budgets for grant requests, monitors expenses and ensures program compliance with grant reporting and other requirements.
  •  Coordinates and is involved with the development program.
  •  Coordinates the annual external audit.
  •  Ensures that relevant and timely financial data is presented to management and the Board.
  •  Supervises the fiscal assistant and other relevant support staff positions.
  •  Participates in bi-monthly Board meetings and monthly Finance Committee meetings.
  • Supports and advises the Executive Director in decision-making.
  • Human Resources
  • Oversees Program Administrator’s office including human resources, benefits administration, professional insurances, and the separation and regulatory oversight and legal compliance under LSC regulatory rubric. 
  • Operations
  • Works closely with the Program Administrator, oversees administrative functions for SLS including facilities management and equipment inventory. 
  • Oversees contracts, leases, and other legal documents and agreements.
  • Procures, manages and monitors all program insurance policies including general liability, property, professional liability, and workers’ compensation.
  • Qualifications 
  • Minimum of five years experience managing a finance department; non-profit experience preferred.
  • Minimum of BA in accounting; CPA license or advanced degree preferred.
  • Proficiency in financial accounting and spreadsheet software i.e. QuickBooks
  • Experience with donor management software.
  • Familiarity with best practices for computer/cyber security relevant to administrative functions.
  • Demonstrated experience with personnel and operational/administrative management. 
  • High degree of flexibility, ability to multi-task, significant initiative, and attention to details and accuracy.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Excellent people skills, the ability to work effectively with a team and with diverse groups and individuals.
