Position Description: 

DEPUTY PUBLIC DEFENDER

The Jefferson County Public Defender (JCPD) seeks a dynamic leader to serve as a Deputy Public Defender for the Birmingham Division. JCPD will provide zealous representation to indigent defendants in the Birmingham Division. A Deputy Public Defender (DPD) combines demonstrated dedication to the representation of indigent clients with strong leadership and litigation skills to ensure the office maintains the highest standard of client service. Deputy Public Defenders are involved in all aspects of the day-to-day operations of JCPD in the Birmingham Division including personnel matters, community outreach, budget, training and development.
The Deputy Public Defender(s) will report directly to the Public Defender and assist in developing and implementing the strategic vision of JCPD. Deputy Public Defenders will manage the workflow in the office while maintaining a reduced, but active caseload.

THE SUCCESSFUL CANDIDATE WILL HAVE:
• The ability to serve as Public Defender in the absence of the Public Defender;
• The ability to manage the day-to-day operations of the office;
• Strong written and verbal communication skills;
• Significant supervisory experience, as well as the ability to provide legal and managerial leadership for all attorneys, investigators, paralegals, social workers, support staff and other professional staff in the office;
• The ability to foster a high standard of representation in subordinates;
• The ability to ensure staff accountability through consistent and regular feedback while fostering mentorship, teamwork, and communication;
• The ability to develop and implement relevant policies, practices, and training materials;
• The ability to garner community support by building strong working relationships with the courts, government, community-based organizations and the private bar;
• The ability to consult with and guide subordinate attorneys on case preparation and trial strategy;
• The ability to maintain a partial caseload while performing managerial functions;
• Demonstrated commitment to zealous and comprehensive public defense and/or other public interest work; and
• Effective mentoring and client advocacy skills.

Requirements: 

SKILLS/QUALIFICATIONS:
• Substantial litigation experience and strong trial skills (7-10 years criminal trial experience preferred);
• Capital trial experience;
• Demonstrated leadership abilities, specifically including management and supervisory abilities (one to three years preferred); and
• Graduation from an approved school of law and possession of a certificate of admission to the Bar of the Supreme Court of the State of Alabama. Applicants from other jurisdictions must apply for Reciprocity prior to beginning work.
