CONSUMER ADVOCATE

Mid-Minnesota Legal Aid (Legal Aid) seeks an advocate to assist with our fair lending, homeownership, consumer, and taxpayer rights work in Minneapolis. Legal Aid provides legal representation to clients with low incomes, disabilities, and seniors - supported by funding from the State of Minnesota, the federal government, local governments, the United Way, foundations, local law firms and corporations, etc. Legal Aid enjoys a good rapport with, and strong support from the organized bar. Legal Aid does not receive funds from the Legal Services Corporation.

Description: The consumer advocate will work with Legal Aid’s existing team of consumer rights advocates. The advocate will also work with Legal Aid’s neighborhood clinics: (1) in south Minneapolis serving East African immigrants, (2) at the Minneapolis Urban League in north Minneapolis (in partnership with the Cardozo Society), (3) with our new community economic development project in north Minneapolis, and (4) at Hennepin County Medical Center’s Whittier Clinic. The advocate will develop and strengthen community relationships to assist Legal Aid in identifying and addressing economic barriers faced by people with low incomes in Minneapolis. The advocate will screen clients who come to the neighborhood clinics and other locations for tax/homeownership/consumer problems; develop and provide outreach and training events; serve as a point of contact for community partners; help to identify systemic issues; and work with the consumer/tax unit on individual cases for clients.

Requirements: 

Applicants must be a college graduate or have equivalent experience relevant to the advocate position (four years of applicable education and experience). Applicants must have a demonstrated interest in and commitment to the needs of low-income/vulnerable clients. Excellent communication, analytical, and writing skills are required. Must be highly organized, flexible, and creative. Proficiency using Microsoft Windows and Office is required. Diverse economic, social, or cultural experiences and relevant language skills are a plus.

Salary range: 
Up to $50,000 based upon experience and the MMLA salary schedule.
