Position Description:

Organization: Bay Area Legal Aid’s (BayLegal) mission is to provide high quality legal assistance regardless of a client’s location, language, or disability. We are the largest provider of free civil legal services to low-income residents of the San Francisco Bay Area with regional offices in seven counties. Our services include advice, referrals, limited scope assistance, extended representation, public policy and impact advocacy, trainings, and community education. From Napa Valley to Silicon Valley, BayLegal ensures fairness in the civil justice system for the most vulnerable members of our community. We help our clients protect their livelihoods, their health, and their families. BayLegal’s 120+ staff members provide wraparound legal services in housing preservation, domestic violence and sexual assault prevention, economic security, consumer protection, and healthcare access.

Position: We seek an energetic, culturally sensitive attorney with a strong commitment to public interest and social justice advocacy to split time between our Legal Barriers to Employment Project (LBEP) and our San Francisco Medical-Legal Partnership (SFMLP). LBEP is an innovative project that offers a comprehensive approach in assisting welfare recipients with civil legal problems which interfere with their ability to obtain or retain employment and/or education and training. Common legal issues include: suspended professional and driver’s licenses, child support obligations, immigration and access to public benefits. The position also requires advocacy at administrative hearings, court appearances, impact policy advocacy and community outreach.

The SFMLP provides outreach and legal assistance to clients whose access point to our services is through Zuckerberg San Francisco General's (ZSFG) Family Health Center. The attorney will focus on civil legal services designed to meet the individualized needs of patients. Advocacy will be across practice areas, including housing, health access, and public benefits (e.g. SSI, CalWORKs, and General Assistance). The successful applicant will be expected to run on-site legal clinics at ZSFG's Family Health Center. Client representation will include interviews, negotiations with governmental agencies/opposing parties, research and writing, and representation at administrative and court proceedings. The attorney is expected to train health professionals on issue-spotting and triage of the civil legal needs of their patients and to engage in outreach with social services and other community organizations. The attorney will be working on-site at ZSFG at least one day per week.
