Opening for one Staff Attorney at Michigan’s State Appellate Defender Office to provide legal representation to indigent criminal defendants on appeal. Openings at SADO’s Detroit and/or Lansing locations; earliest start date of July 1, 2016.
SADO attorneys represent indigent clients for direct appeal or other post-conviction proceedings who wish to challenge their guilty pleas, trial convictions, and/or sentences. Representation requires travel throughout Michigan to counsel incarcerated clients and advocate in circuit and appellate courts. Applicants must have outstanding legal research and writing, communication, and trial and appellate court advocacy skills. A demonstrated commitment to indigent defense, public service, and clerkship experience are preferred. Qualified candidates must be admitted or eligible for transfer to Michigan Bar and must have strong computer skills in MS Word and Adobe.
Starting salary range for entry-level: $51-56k. Attorneys with 5 or more years of criminal defense experience may apply; salary dependent on experience. Fringe benefits include health, dental, 401k, and 12 paid holidays. In addition, SADO Assistant Defenders may be eligible for student loan repayment assistance through the John R.
