Training Overview

The Sentencing and Disposition Intensive Skills Training is designed specifically for public defenders, social workers and experts to develop and improve their overall sentencing disposition skills as a team. This includes: interviewing, investigation, litigation, mitigation, and advocacy skills and techniques needed to impact sentencing at all phases of criminal defense.

Join your colleagues for two days in Baltimore to learn new skills and improve old ones. National Legal Aid & Defender Association, University of Maryland School of Social Work Office of Continuing Professional Education and State of Maryland Office of the Public Defender partnered in presenting this unique program to help you meet the challenges of preparing for dispositions as a team.

Participants will learn the following skills

  • Creative report writing
  • Identifying themes for effective representation
  • Persuasive testimony: prepare and be a witness
  • Persuasive and creating visuals to support them
  • Organizing your case material

Day 1: Workshop Agenda

  • Various stages of representation
  • Vehicle for mitigation at every level (bail review, hearings, trial and sentencing)
  • Confluence of Factors (mental health, addictions, environmental, learning educational deficit)
  • Telling the Client’s Story

Day 2: Workshop Agenda

  • Interviewing to get the information you need
  • Race and culture
  • Brainstorming and developing your story: Who do you need? What do you need?
  • Technology and visual presentation (presentation, technology, demonstrative aide)
  • Identifying themes and story delivery
  • Embracing the story of life: debriefing and check in
  • Closing Arguments
