NASAMS Annual Sentencing Advocacy Conference

St. Louis, MO
October 30 - November 2

2012's LIFE AND LIBERTY IN THE BALANCE: A Capital and Criminal Defense Litigation and Investigation Conference will incorporate sentencing advocacy and mitigation specialization as part of it's curriculum. The NASAMS Annual Sentencing Advocacy Conference will not be held as an independent event in 2012.

The National Alliance of Sentencing Advocates & Mitigation Specialists (NASAMS) invites you to join us for our Annual Sentencing Advocacy Training. This training will focus on furthering the development of the mitigation/advocacy profession and achieving excellence in the fight to protect our clients in all stages of the criminal justice system.

The training will provide a unique opportunity for those in the mitigation and advocacy fields. Sessions will be instructed by the leading experts in the disciplines of law, social work and mental health. Topics will include, but are not limited to:

  • Intellectual disabilities and adaptive deficits
  • Trauma and torture
  • Neurobiology
  • Preparing for a sentencing hearing
  • Impact of incarceration
  • Sexual abuse and sexual offenders
  • Victim outreach

How Sessions are Facilitated

We will explore ways to create teams that are more than the sum of their parts. The training will help us to apply these concepts while advocating for our clients using the best and most current research and practices available. This year will have a special focus on communication and relationships, between the defense team and the client.
  • Sessions on interviewing and teamwork will feature leading mitigation specialists and mental health professionals and will provide attendees with the opportunity for small-group work and hands-on practice with those same experts.
  • Sessions will focus on effectively interviewing and communicating with clients about the most difficult and personal subjects including sexual abuse, child abuse and adaptive deficits; finding a balance between strong relationships with our clients and healthy boundaries; and building relationships with victims and their family.

Developing Dedication in the Profession

The NASAMS training will offer a series of sessions on the core skills and knowledge that form the foundation of a dedicated mitigation practice. These sessions are suitable for those who seek to enter or have recently entered the profession and those who want to get back to the basics.

Who Should Attend the NASAMS Sentencing Advocacy Training?

The NASAMS Sentencing Advocacy Training is a must for:
