Make sure information is accurate

Date November 28, 2005

Whether it is during an interview or just providing background, it is important to always provide the most accurate information possible. Inaccurate information can hurt your cause, damage your credibility and give fuel to possible opposition. Keep these rules in mind when you are talking to the media.

• If you have time to prepare before the interview, double check your facts

• If you don’t know the answer, pass the reporter on to someone who does or ask if you can get back to them with that information, then do it

• When citing statistics, make sure they are the most recent and if there are no recent ones available (within the last two years), inform the reporter of the age of the information you have given

• Know the correct names, titles and spelling of any programs or individuals you wish to cite for the article
