Reach out to local news media

Date November 28, 2005

The local news media, whether it is print, television or radio, is one of the most powerful tools non-profit organizations have in spreading their message. Regardless of the type of news media, it is important to know the reporters and news editors who select the stories for broadcast and publication that most relate to your area of expertise. Use these tips to increase your coverage in your local news media.

• Keep track of the reporters who cover stories similar to yours

• Pitch pertinent and interesting story ideas to these reporters

• Offer additional sources for more information on stories

• Suggest a new or expanded focus on exiting coverage

• Meet with editorial boards to promote programs, successes and needs
